Week 3

Attention Research Interns! Week 3 has officially started and we're in the Proposal development phase! This week, your primary focus will be on building a strong foundation for your research proposal.

Learning Goal:

Learn to design the study, drafting sampling, and simple analysis plan (main variables).

Weekly Schedule:

Monday

Divide tasks of the week

Start Drafting the Methodology Section: Begin writing the methodology section of your research proposal. Pay close attention to:

·       Research Design

·       Data Collection Instruments

·       Sampling Techniques

Tuesday

Initial Data Analysis Plan:

Watch Recorded Session: Complete the recorded Session-3 on Sample Size Calculation and Sampling Techniques. This will be essential for developing a robust methodology.

Wednesday

Watch the session on ERC Form (first 14 minutes only) for scientific review part.

Thursday

Methodology Review & Submission: Review and refine the methodology section you've drafted. Once finalized, submit it to your mentors on the ERC Portal. See tips of assignment below.

Friday

Mentor Meeting: You will have a meeting with your mentors to discuss your submitted methodology section. Be prepared to receive feedback and finalize this section for the first part of your proposal based on their guidance

Tips for Assignment:

Interns will fill questions in ERC form, all those other than questionnaire development and other than ethics questions and then in mentor meeting, mentor will give feedback on that work. For Methodology related questions: Use the written guidelines on Methodology for enhancing the quality of questions in ERC form that are open ended. Those that are close-ended need only selecting an option. Guidelines of methodology are attached with the workshop reading material at the end of this page.

Workshop Session-3

Basics of Health Research Workshop Session 3

“Sampling isn't just a technical step in your research, it's the foundation that determines the validity, reliability, and credibility of your results.”

Access the Workshop Recording: Sampling & Sample Size – The Heart of Study Design

In this session, we explore the full scope of sampling concepts and techniques, including when to use random vs. non-random sampling, how to define inclusion and exclusion criteria, and which technique fits which type of study. We also walk through steps of sample size calculation using OpenEpi and explain key concepts like confidence limits and confidence level in simple terms. Statistics are taken from other articles to calculate sample size. (In case where no information is available for a survey study from previous articles, some arbitrary value of prevalence is taken. Read the slides uploaded with in canvas for details on how taking different prevalence values can affect sample size).

Focusing on making sampling stronger is important as sampling decisions largely affect the scope of your publication. For believing in your results, journals/ users will need information on how well the sample was selected and how accurately the sample size was calculated. Right sampling will reduce bias, and ensure your results are credible.

Watch the video below and start learning.

The recording includes live participant questions, examples, and practical guidance. (apologies for the background noise in last 2 min of the video)

Also learn to adjust non–response rate in research, as guided in the slides shared with this session. For this you need information from other articles on non-response rate of participants in data collection, if reported by any authors. We encourage our researchers also to record response rate in their study and report in final publication for help of others.

Enjoy the learning!
