Dear Interns, Welcome to this Internship Program!!

I’m Dr. Bushra Anwar, and I’ll be serving as your Course Director throughout this internship. Together with a dedicated team of facilitators and mentors, we are excited to have you onboard as you begin this journey in clinical and public health research.

Before diving into the details of this program and collaborative projects, please take time to familiarize yourself with this online workspace, policies and values at BMY Health, and expectations with interns and mentors. This will help you have a smoother work experience for maximizing your professional growth at BMY Health.

Clinical and public health research forms the foundation of evidence-based practice and is essential for addressing the evolving health needs of communities. By engaging in research, you not only contribute to advancing science and driving healthcare innovation but also develop the skills to design and apply evidence-based strategies in a rapidly changing world. This process enables you to serve both community health priorities and organizational needs more effectively.

Our aim, through this program, is not only to provide you with rigorous training in research methodology, data analysis, and scientific writing but also to cultivate critical, ethical, and impactful thinking.

We envision our interns as future leaders in research, capable of generating knowledge, supporting communities, and shaping healthcare systems with integrity and innovation.

We look forward to working together and supporting your growth. Let’s make this a productive, collaborative, and inspiring experience.

Important Readings

Please begin by learning how to use this platform:

• Understand how to navigate schedules in Odoo

• Learn how to communicate with your colleagues in chat

• Learn how to access lessons, or upload files in your groups.

You’ll find the Program Book, Collaboration Agreement, ERC Policy, Rules of Giving Feedback, Duties of Intern Leader, helpful in understanding: here

• The learning outcomes of program and expectations from interns and mentors.

• The rights and responsibilities of interns, mentors, and BMY Health in the collaboration.

• Values, ethics, and policies applicable to all interns, mentors and research collaborators at BMY Health.

• Tips for successfully leading a milestone, and teamwork by developing collaboration and leadership skills.

•   Contact HR person when having issues with navigating resources, coordination issues with team members, or mentors, or for any administrative support, guidance on leadership, communication, team work, and managing conflicts or burn outs. HR will also help with arranging meetings with Instructor (need based tutorials for technical steps of research such as literature searching, referencing software, data analysis etc).

•  Contact your Team Leader to discuss task delegation and for reporting any issues delaying your assignment completion.

• Contact your Mentor for coordination on meetings and assignment reviews.

•  Contact Program Director when having issues with resources of learning, intellectual support for mentors, second opinion on research scope, extension of deadlines, gaining clarity of deliverables and BMY Health policies, sharing feedback of staff, or reporting any deviation from event that may compromise research ethics.

After you've gone through all the learning materials of a workshop, apply them in project assignments, and relate where else you can apply in daily life. If you encounter any issues, please share them in the discussion forum. This will help your instructors clarify your concepts, and they can then plan a tutorial session where more queries are being posted. If your concern is unique and not widely shared, you may still request support through HR to arrange a tutorial. However, once a tutorial on a specific topic has been scheduled, it will not be repeated. Please ensure your attendance. Come prepared for discussion in the tutorial. Watching recording and going through presentations is necessary before tutorial for effective learning.

Please keep in mind that our interns and mentors come from diverse backgrounds, work schedules, and time zones. Many of you may be working full-time or managing other responsibilities alongside this internship. We ask that you practice flexibility and empathy when navigating these differences within your team. Sometimes, you may need to contribute a bit more to support a teammate, and other times, you might need to lean on your peers for assistance. The final credits in research will be according to the contributions. If anytime you feel overwhelmed with busy members/ lack of cohesion or support, open and respectful communication is key; do not hesitate to speak up for your needs, without violating respect of others. We announce final awards for interns not just on basis of research performance but also professionalism.

That said, active participation is expected from every intern. Since this is a collaborative learning program, outcomes, especially manuscript preparation, are a shared responsibility, and recognition (such as authorship or certification) is based on meaningful contributions as per ICMJE criteria.

If you encounter challenges within your team that impact collaboration or progress, please reach out to the HR coordinator without delay. We are here to support you. To help you develop a strong, productive, and ethical team culture, we have uploaded reading materials and practical guidance on effective teamwork, project management, and conflict resolution.

HR role: HR person will be checking compliance, and if leader has not shared information/ assignment then HR should check with them, preferably calling, as director will be looking for detailed information on every groups progress. Also if leader highlights any members for non-compliance, HR should call that member. Building ease of communication, mechanisms for regular and free flow of information will be HR role. HR will also keep liaise-on with mentors. Every Monday checking how was mentor meeting of weekend, and working on any issues highlighted by the mentor and reading minutes to see issues highlighted by intern leader. HR will make plan to keep up the motivation levels.

HR should train all group leaders when they start their role. And after weekly mentors meeting, ask mentors to share notes of their observation in meeting related to interns’ motivation and work on any issues highlighted by them.

Role of Mentor: Mentor can also play role in interns compliance by sharing detailed notes with HR, if in meeting they observe low motivation in any members specially group leader as they influence the rest of the group. Before concluding the meeting, check if the interns are ready to take up tasks on their own, otherwise divide duties among them. Also its advisable to keep things on official channels so that HR can pick cues of any motivation related issues.

Role of Director: Director will be taking notes from HR to know progress of groups and timely suggest any interventions. Interns can also reach out to share their issues that could not be solved by leader/ mentor/ HR, individually or as team. BMY Health encourages open communication among all members of the organization.

Workshop Session-1

“Basics of Health Research” Workshop by BMY Health Canada

Session 1

Becoming a great researcher doesn’t start with tools, it starts with thinking differently. In this lecture, we’ll introduce you to the mindset of research: how curiosity, feasibility, and persistence can turn a simple interest in publications or career advancement into a lifelong passion for discovery and innovation.

🌟 And where does it all begin? With a research topic.

Choosing the right research topic is your first and most important step. But how do you do it wisely? This workshop will walk you through the foundations of research topic selection by focusing on three essential components:

  1. Identifying Research Gaps
Understand what is already known, and more importantly, what isn’t. We’ll explore different types of gaps:
    • Evidence gaps
    • Population gaps
    • Methodology gaps
    • Temporal gaps
  2. Conducting an Effective Literature Search
Learn how to explore existing knowledge systematically to move from a broad idea to a clear, focused, and researchable topic.
  3. Saving and Organizing Literature
We’ll show you how to build your personal research database—by extracting and saving useful information from top articles into an Excel sheet. This organized approach will support you not only in identifying research gaps but also during manuscript writing and future study design.
