To gain the maximum from these workshops on STATA, it is advised that the interns follow this sequence:

  1. Watch the recordings
  2. Install STATA
  3. Practice using it, with datasets and assignments of Dr. Owais (do not start practicing on your own datasets)

  6. Attend tutorial sessions for addressing all their queries
  7. Re-watch the videos for better understanding
  8. Complete assignment

Session 1: Introduction to STATA and Data Management

SESSION 1 recording:

Please focus on learning do file and working directory and practice after installing STATA.

Assignment:
For this assignment use auto.dta file stored within STATA

  • Start a log file
  • Do your assignment, which is:

  1. Create a list of car that includes last 10 observations only with following three variables: make, price & rep78

2. Create a list of car makes and prices. Apply following conditions:

    • The car’s repair record of 1978 should be from 5th category
    • The car’s weight should be 3000 pounds or less

3. Create a variable using mpg variable such as the new variable is a categorical variable with three categories. Label the newly created variable with informative label and assign names for each category

4. One way to handle non-normal variable is log transformation. The variable 'displacement' is not normally distributed. Create a new variable which is a log transformation of the variable 'displacement'

  • Save your assignment with following formatting firstname_lastname.log
  • Make sure you submit your log file with “.log” extension

Why we preferred STATA in our internship: STATA is a commonly used software internationally, and learning it will also help interns get familiar to codes, after which learning R will be easier. We did not include SPSS as it easier to learn and we expect interns may have exposure to that already. We can share recordings of those too in case some intern wants to learn more about SPSS, after they have completed learning of STATA.

We will also provide additional certificate for this learning. Submitting all 4 workshop assignments and passing the final quiz is necessary to get certificate of STATA workshop. This certificate is additional to the internship certificate which interns receive at the end of program.
